Medina Public Square around 1916 — nearly a century after Austin Badger cleared it.

Austin Badger walked from New York with a knapsack, and outlived four wives

The 24-year-old veteran who cleared the Medina Public Square, built the first courthouse, and became Montville Township's first Justice of the Peace.

In the spring of 1818, Austin Badger walked from Chenango County, New York — on foot to Buffalo, open rowboat to Cattaraugus Creek, on foot to Presque Isle, schooner to Ashtabula, on foot to Medina. He was 24. Within a year he had cleared the Public Square, built the first courthouse, and opened the first tavern in the county. In 1820 he entered 100 acres in what became Montville, one of the first two land entries in the township. He married four times. All four wives died before he did.
