Spencer Township's zoning resolution establishes a single district across the whole unincorporated township, R-1 Low Density Residential, with no business, commercial or industrial district anywhere in it. The minimum lot is two acres per single-family dwelling and three acres for a two-family, with 200 feet of lot width and frontage for a single-family dwelling, a 150 foot front yard measured from the centerline of the street, 25 foot side yards and a 50 foot rear yard. What is the history of Spencer Township Ohio

Three settlements inside Spencer Township appear in the Weymouth Preservation Society's compilation of lost Medina County towns and survive only as road names. Rivers Corners, at Congress and Rivers Corners roads, is where Calvin Spencer built the township's first saw mill on the Black River about 1833, following it with a dam about six months later and then a grist mill. Pawnee, at Pawnee and New London Eastern roads, began as Esselburn's Corners after Louis Esselburn's general store of 1872 and had its own post office from January 21, 1879 to August 30, 1887; its old saw mill burned in 1948. Spencer Mills is listed as lost as well. The township's own history names John P. Marsh as the first settler in 1823, buying land along the Black River at three dollars an acre, and says the township is named for Calvin Spencer, a saw and grist mill owner who gave fifty dollars in lumber for a schoolhouse in exchange for the naming rights.

Spencer Township is a five-mile square in the far southwest of Medina County, Ohio, with the Village of Spencer incorporated separately inside it. The 2020 census counted 1,812 people and 687 housing units in the township's 24.07 square miles, and 684 people and 317 housing units in the village's 0.99 square miles. Lorain County forms the northern and western boundaries, Chatham Township the eastern side and Homer Township the southern side, with Litchfield, Harrisville and Ashland County's Sullivan Township each touching a corner. John P. Spencer Township's own website names no natural gas utility, gas cooperative or propane dealer, and no trash or recycling hauler either, so refuse collection is arranged privately rather than provided by the township. The Medina County Auditor's records show Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation owning two public-utility parcels inside the township, 5.00 acres at the northwest corner and 2.10 acres farther east along the northern boundary, but Columbia Gas Transmission is an interstate transmission company and no Columbia Gas of Ohio distribution parcel was found in the township. State Route 162 runs east to west and is signed locally as Chatham Road; State Route 301 runs north to south and is Spencer Road. The nearest interstate access is I-71 at State Route 83 in Lodi, about 9.7 miles southeast in a straight line, and the nearest US highway is US 42 and US 224 at Lodi about 5.7 miles southeast.
